Cheng² Duo with special guest clarinetist, James Campbell
Cellist Bryan Cheng and pianist Silvie Cheng are siblings born in Ottawa and Tokyo to Chinese parents. The Cheng Squared Duo are proud Canadians who also have musical bases in Berlin and New York City. Bryan is a prize winner of international competitions, most recently the Queen Elizabeth in Geneva. The sibling duo will be joined by internationally acclaimed clarinetist James Campbell to perform Beethoven’s Trio Op. 11, Bruch Op. 83, Brahms’ Clarinet Trio and some Klezmer inspired music!
The concert will be performed in the Rose Gellert Hall.

About James Campbell, clarinet
Dubbed “Canada’s premier clarinetist” by the Ottawa Citizen, James Campbell has performed as soloist and chamber musician in over 35 countries with over 60 orchestras including the Boston Pops, Montreal Symphony and the London Symphony. He has collaborated with Glenn Gould and Aaron Copland and toured with over 35 string quartets, including the Guarneri, Amadeus and Vermeer. Of his over 40 recordings, the BBC and the Times of London rated his recording of the Brahms Clarinet Quintet as the best available and his CD Stolen Gems (Marquis Records) won a JUNO. He has been named Canada’s Artist of the Year, awarded the Queen’s Gold and Diamond Jubilee Medal, an Honourary Doctor of Law, and the Order of Canada. James Campbell has been Artistic Director of the Festival of the Sound since 1985 and was Professor of Music at the famed Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University from 1988-2019 and continues to give masterclasses worldwide.

Cellist Bryan Cheng, prizewinner of the 2023 Canada Council For the Arts’ Virginia Parker Prize and 2022 Verbier Festival’s Prix Yves Paternot, and pianist Silvie Cheng, 2022-23 Cecilia Concerts Musician-in-Residence and National Arts Club Artist Fellow, have been making music together for nearly their entire lives. Since officially forming the Cheng² Duo at their 2011 Carnegie Weill Recital Hall debut, their artistry has left lasting impressions across the globe, with extensive tours to illustrious concert halls and international festivals throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and South Africa.
Recent and upcoming concert highlights include debuts at the Frauenkirche Dresden, Flagey (Brussels), Munich Künstlerhaus, California Center for the Arts, Dame Myra Hess Series (Chicago), Chamber Music at the Clark (Los Angeles), Harvard University, Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts (Kingston), Banff International String Quartet Festival, Rockport Chamber Music Festival, Heidelberger Frühling Festival, Waterford Concert Series (VA), Music Toronto, National Centre for Performing Arts Mumbai; guest soloist appearances with the Filarmonic Banatul (Romania); returns to Montréal’s Salle Bourgie, Ottawa Chamberfest, Chamberfest Cheboygan; and recital tours throughout Europe (North Macedonia, Romania, Switzerland, Germany), South Africa, USA, and Canada. In the vanguard of creative programming, Bryan and Silvie are equally committed to presenting traditional masterworks, rediscovering neglected repertoire, and championing the music of their time. Since 2013, they have commissioned and arranged 15 new works, as well as curated cross-disciplinary concert experiences that meld classical and contemporary music with jazz, poetry, and visual/media arts.
