Langley Community Music School Welcomes Stellar Instructors
Langley Community Music School (LCMS) is flourishing with some of the world’s best musicians and educators joining the LCMS faculty in 2015. The stellar line-up includes famed pianist Henri-Paul Sicsic, and Borealis String Quartet violinist/violist, Nikita Pogrebnoy, as well as violinist Will Chen, violinist Peter Ing, and cellist Marcus Jeehon Kim.
“Langley Community Music School has achieved significant prominence in the field of music education,” says LCMS Principal Susan Magnusson. “I am thrilled to announce that our school has been able to attract such highly-acclaimed and experienced faculty teachers to join our faculty. Students of all levels will benefit from their interaction with these outstanding musicians.”
Canadian pianist Henri-Paul Sicsic is a concerto soloist, recitalist and chamber musician. Sicsic has performed with symphony orchestras and other musical festivals throughout Canada, the United States, France, Spain, Russia, Finland, and Israel. An award-winning pianist, Sicsic has produced several CD recordings, which have achieved notable acclaim. He has also been aired in New York City on WQXR radio, on the National French program “France Musique,” on CBC in Canada, and in other major centers in the USA. In addition to being a world-renowned pianist, Sicsic is also an inspired pedagogue with a tremendous following, helping students distinguish themselves at the national and international levels, earning prestigious Fulbright and Canada Council grants, as well as winning top prizes and awards at major competitions. Russian-Born violist and violinist Nikita Pogrebnoy has performed across Europe, Mexico, Central and North America, and the USSR, including soloist performances with the St. Petesburg Chamber Orchestra. He has performed for many dignitaries including the Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu and the Prime Minister of Canada on Parliament Hill for an audience of over 75,000 people. He has earned notable international awards and has been broadcast both on television and radio, including the National Public Radio aired across the USA and the award-winning video, “Beethoven, Allegro Molto.” He has also taught at many well-known universities throughout North America, Mexico, Europe and Asia. Violist and violinist Peter Ing is an accomplished Canadian performer and educator. Ing has performed around the world from International Music Festivals in North America and Europe to the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra and Vancouver Island Symphony Orchestra. Ing is member of the Suzuki Association of America and a registered Suzuki Violin /Viola Instructor, helping his students win multiple awards, including the prestigious Gold Medal Award from the Royal Conservatory of Music.
Returning to Metro Vancouver from international studies and performances in Europe, Taiwanese-Canadian Will Chen will teach violin and viola at LCMS. From studying violin in Surrey from the age of 6 to completing his undergraduate studies at University of Victoria and a Master’s degree in Germany, Chen has remained tops in his class, receiving several scholarships and graduating with honours. Today, Chen is an accomplished soloist and chamber musician, having performed all over Canada, Europe and the United Kingdom, including the rising International group Mainzer Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra. Chen is looking forward to giving back to the community and sharing his musical knowledge and his passion for teaching.
Cellist Marcus Jeehon Kim is thrilled to repeat a turn as an educator at Langley Community Music School, having taught at the school in 2008. Born in Vancouver, Marcus Kim holds a Masters in Music from Yale University. He has extensive orchestral experience, including acting principal cellist and assistant principal cellist with the Korean Symphony Orchestra, principal cellist with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, and acting principal cellist with the Victoria Symphony. His extensive teaching experience includes teaching positions at the Korea National University of the Arts, University of Calgary, Mount Royal Conservatory, and Douglas College.
These very talented musicians join other recent LCMS newcomers: cellist Judy Lou, violinist Charlene Bentum, pianist Kathleen Stanyer, and violinist, Karina Slupski, who joined the school earlier in the year. Come meet the new teachers at an upcoming LCMS Open House on Saturday May 9, 2015 from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm. And plan to attend a special welcoming masterclass at 2:30 pm to meet renowned pianist Henri-Paul Sicsic, listen to student performances and discover some teaching insights. This event is open to both the viewing public and students free of charge. Note that master class students should be playing at Royal Conservatory Grade 10 or ARCT level.
