Canadian Composers Celebrated in Eclectic Saxophone Concert

Discover the lively, entertaining and diverse saxophone repertoire of Saxophilia, a Vancouver-based saxophone quartet, set to perform at Langley Community Music School’s (LCMS) upcoming Concerts Café Classico concert, coffee and commentary at 2:30 pm on Sunday afternoon, October 28, 2018.

With a love of classical saxophone and a passion for a diversity of music — from contemporary music, jazz arrangements and lighter fare — Saxophilia will be performing a wide range of repertoire in many different contexts. “The group is dedicated to introducing audiences to new and exciting works for the medium, especially by Canadian composers,” says Saxophilia member Julia Nolan. In addition to presenting a program featuring “a range of repertoire that Saxophilia is noted for, the group is excited to be premiering a new quartet by Canadian composer Joseph Lai.”

In addition to featuring Joseph Lai’s Saxophone Quartet no. 2, the programme will include a mix of original classical saxophone repertoire, including Peter Hannan’s Fast Truck Bop and Pierre Lantier’s Andante et Scherzetto. Rounding out the programme will be performances of Hoagy Charmichael’s Stardust and Fred Stride’s Tango del Currie.

Formed in 1996, Saxophilia’s members include Julia Nolan on soprano saxophone, Kris Covlin on alto saxophone, David Branter on tenor saxophone, and Colin MacDonald on baritone saxophone. All of the quartet members are active performers, as soloists and band members, who perform a variety of musical genres from classical to jazz to popular music. The quartet has appeared at a variety of new music festivals and has presented programs at regional conferences for the North American Saxophone Alliance as well as at the 12th World Saxophone Congress in Montreal. The quartet is an avid promoter of Canadian composers and has successfully commissioned multiple Canadian works. Learn more at www.saxophilia.com.

“LCMS is thrilled to welcome Saxophilia to the stage,” says LCMS Artistic Director Elizabeth Bergmann. “Their performance will shine light on a diversity of highly entertaining music that really showcases the range of the saxophone. It is a programme not to be missed.”
