Garlands of Spain with Turning Point Ensemble & the Bergmann Piano Duo
This programme will draw on the music of Spain and Spanish influenced music and will spotlight the premiere of Marcel Bergmann’s new arrangement of Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield, Manuel De Falla’s El amor brujo and Spanish Garland, a piece based on 12 Spanish folk melodies by Jose Evangelista. A new Spanish flavoured piece for 2 pianos written especially for this concert by Marcel Bergmann will also be premiered.
The concert will be performed in the Rose Gellert Hall.

About Turning Point Ensemble
Founded in 2002 by its musician members, Turning Point Ensemble (TPE) is a large chamber ensemble (16 instrumentalists and conductor) with a mandate to increase the understanding and appreciation of music composed during the past hundred years. The ensemble has built a strong reputation for outstanding musicianship and linking seminal 20th century repertoire to contemporary works through thoughtful programming and innovative presentations. Uniquely and flexibly sized between a small chamber ensemble and a symphonic orchestra, TPE presentations offer a symphonic palette with a chamber music sensibility. In addition to its concerts, tours and recordings, the ensemble has regularly mounted innovative interdisciplinary productions including operas, and collaborations with dance, theatre, visual art and moving image.
Turning Point Ensemble has released six CDs and one DVD on the Artifact, Centrediscs, Atma Classique, Redshift Records, Orlando, and Parma labels. We have presented a diverse range of repertoire, commissioned and performed works by Canadian and international composers, and partnered with a number of community and cultural organizations.
In 2010, TPE was awarded the Rio Tinto Alcan Award for Music 2011 – the largest production prize for music in Canada for its presentation of FIREBIRD 2011, resulting in 4 sold out performances in March 2011 at The Cultch in Vancouver.
Other significant large-scale interdisciplinary projects include Flying White -飞白 which was co-produced with Wen Wei Dance for the 2020 PuSh Festival with three sold-out performances and the premiere of air india [redacted] (5 performances November 2015). We have also had two major partnerships with Ballet British Columbia, and several projects with live music and moving image.
We are proud to have presented a diverse range of repertoire, commissioned and performed works by Canadian and international composers, and partnered with a number of community and cultural organizations. A highlight is our ground-breaking cultural collaboration with the Westbank First Nation in the Okanagan for an outdoor presentation of Barbara Pentland/Dorothy Livesay’s 1954 opera, The Lake at Quails’ Gate Winery, the original homestead of Susan Allison and her family.
The central artistic vision of the TPE is to bring to the public extraordinary music for large chamber ensemble written from the early 20th century through to present day. We draw audiences to this music through outstanding performances, and intelligent programming that creates a lively context for the music. We seek to create links from the music of earlier times to new music, to explore relationships and connections between composers and their music, to perform significant large-scale works from the Canadian and international repertoire, to collaborate with multiple art forms in extraordinary ways, and to establish meaningful long-term relationships with some of Canada’s most talented composers through commissioning and multiple performances.
Turning Point has toured internationally in 2018 to Asia and the Czech Republic, in addition to two Canadian tours. We have performed in many festivals and series including the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival, New Music Concerts Toronto, ECM+ Montreal, groundswell Winnipeg, New Music Edmonton, MusicFest Vancouver, Vancouver International Jazz Festival, the Sound of Dragon Festival and the Modulus Festival.
About Owen Underhill, Artistic Director
Owen Underhill is Artistic Director and conductor of the Turning Point Ensemble and a composer, and past faculty member in the School for the Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver. Previously, he served as Artistic Director of Vancouver New Music from 1987 to 2000. As a conductor, Underhill enjoys bringing to life new work, and has conducted more that 300 premieres of Canadian and international composers. He has worked with and conducted the music of several prominent composers including Louis Andriessen, Gavin Bryars, Sofia Gubaidulina, Giya Kancheli, Nikolai Korndorf, Rudolf Komorous, James MacMillan, Barbara Pentland, Steve Reich, Linda Catlin Smith, Ana Sokolovic, Toru Takemitsu, Kevin Volans, and Judith Weir. In addition to his conducting with Turning Point Ensemble, he has conducted ensembles including the CBC Radio Orchestra, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, National Art Centre Orchestra, Ostrava New Orchestra (Czech Republic), Prague Modern Ensemble, Cantus Ensemble (Zagreb), CrossSound Festival Alaska, and the Vancouver Intercultural Orchestra.
As a composer, his music has many different expressions and has been described as dense and interesting, colourful, lyrical in inspiration, exuberant and witty, subtle, and thoughtful. Among his recent compositions are a set of solo piano Bagatelles (2013-2022), Gaudi Madrigals (2020) for 8-part choir, the violin solo Cone (2020), Bee Studies (2019), a song cycle based on poems of Renée Sarojini Saklikar for soprano and Turning Point Ensemble, and He is Flying (2020), a work for two erhu and sheng written as part of a dance project with Wen Wei Dance. His compositions are on several recordings including Curio Box on the Orlando label, Still Image on the Centrediscs label as performed by the Bozzini Quartet, and Celestial Machine on the Artifact label. He was nominated as Outstanding Composer at the WCMA awards 2019 for his Cello Concerto, Canzone di Petra was awarded the Outstanding Classical Composition at the WCMA in 2007, and his Love Songs was previously nominated for a Juno award.
Underhill has worked on behalf of Canadian music throughout his career, serving as President of the Canadian Music Centre between 2010 and 2014. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award for extraordinary contributions to Canadian Music in 2017.
About Bergmann Piano Duo – Elizabeth and Marcel Bergmann
The Bergmann Piano Duo’s dynamic and energetic performances of uniquely eclectic programmes have inspired audiences for more than two decades. Their recitals and concerts with orchestras have taken them to many parts of the world, including the United States, Italy, Germany, The Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, France, Macedonia, Greece, China and Canada. The duo has appeared at international festivals including: Festival of the Sound, Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival, Tuckamore Festival, Abbey Bach Festival, Ohrid Summer Festival, Zodiac Festival, The San Francisco International Music Festival, MusicFest Vancouver, Gilmore International Keyboard Festival, Banff Arts Festival, the Royal Bank Calgary International Organ Festival and Competition, Festival Miami, the Tage für Neue Musik, Darmstadt, the Braunschweiger Kammermusik Podium, and EXPO 2000, Hannover.
They have made recordings for the CBC, for several stations of the ARD in Germany and for National Public Radio. The duo has recorded several CDs, which appear on the CordAria, Arktos, Koch International Classics, Naxos, ARS and Brilliant Classics labels. Their latest releases on the Brilliant Classics label feature Marcel’s arrangement for 4 pianos of Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells and a collection of minimal music for multiple pianos also featuring Marcel’s compositions. Their most recent recording, American Stories on the ARS label, features exclusively Marcel’s arrangements.
In addition to their performing careers they also enjoy teaching and working in other capacities in the music industry, and both teach piano at Langley Community Music School (LCMS). They are both Artistic Directors of White Rock Concerts, and Elizabeth is Artistic Director of Concerts and Marcel the Resident Composer at LCMS. Marcel has held a position as Professor of Music at Mohawk College in Hamilton and both Elizabeth and Marcel have been on faculty at Mount Royal University and University of Calgary as well as being involved in various musical projects at The Banff Centre for the Arts. In 2004/2005, they served as Artistic Directors of The Murray Dranoff International Two Piano Competition and Foundation in Miami. For many years, they were members of the Calgary based group Land’s End Chamber Ensemble, recipients of the 2005 and 2006 Western Canadian Music Awards for Outstanding Classical Recording.
The duo studied with Arie Vardi at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater, Hannover and with Jean-Eudes Vaillancourt at the Université de Montréal. They received first prize at the International Chamber Music Competition in Caltanissetta, Italy, and were laureates of The 4th Murray Dranoff International Two Piano Competition. They performed extensively in Germany as members of the young artists’ roster of Yehudi Menuhin-Live Music Now.
Committed to supporting the production of new repertoire, the duo has commissioned and premiered several works by Canadian composers. Their extensive repertoire ranges from the baroque to the contemporary and includes numerous own arrangements and compositions.
