Join us for the 2014 PULSE Music Program and Festival. The Young Composers Competition, and the Pulse Festival Concerts will be held during the workshop.

Pulse Program

Dates: July 21-26
Note: Opening concert July 20
Time: 10:00am to 4:00pm
Cost: LCMS Students: $475 (by June 1) $500 (after June 1)
Non LCMS Students: $575 (by June 1) $600 (after June 1)
A non-refundable deposit of $100 is required at time of registration.
Meals: Lunch is included in the cost of workshop.

What is Pulse?

It is a fun-filled 6 days of master classes and collaboration through chamber music and piano ensemble.  Discover creative possibilities by exploring improvisation and composition. There are evening Festival concerts throughout the week, where students will be introduced to masterpieces of the concert literature performed by the Pulse faculty.

Daily Master classes – Experience playing for your peers in instrument focused masterclasses. Try out some new repertoire and receive feedback or get some new ideas on repertoire you know already. Students will also have the opportunity to focus on technical challenges.

Chamber Music

Piano, violin, viola, cello, wind and other instruments! Students will form chamber groups from duos to quartets and quintets and receive coaching on repertoire as well as in a large ensemble during this intensive program. Pre-formed ensembles are welcome.

Piano Ensemble Class

Two Piano/Piano Duet (with the Bergmann Piano Duo)

Pianists of all ages and backgrounds are welcome to form piano duos, trios, quartets to explore the exciting sounds of piano ensemble.  Learn and hone skills required to play together on multiple pianos. Pre-formed ensembles are welcome.

Pulse is open to a variety of ages and levels:
A minimum standard of RCM grade 8 or equivalent is recommended.  Adults are
welcome.  Note:  Younger students may require parent supervision.

Application Requirements

The program is open to violinists, violists, cellists, pianists, percussionists and wind players.  Applicants must submit an audio sample (CD or DVD) of 2 contrasting works with their application. Note: LCMS students and returning students are not required to submit an audition tape. Pre-formed groups are welcome.

PULSE Young Composers Competition

Submission deadline: July 18
Date: July 24
Cost: Level A – Pre-collegiate: $50
Level B – Collegiate: $75

Young composers are invited to participate in the LCMS Young Composers’ Competition as part of PULSE Music Program and Festival. Composers will have the opportunity to work with Pulse faculty during an afternoon workshop where their pieces will be performed and critiqued by the ensemble and jury. The winning compositions will be premiered by the faculty during the festival.

Rules and Regulations

Each composer may submit only one work.

The submission should consist of one full score and performance parts. The score and parts must be professionally rendered.

The work may be scored for any two-four instruments from the following list: violin, cello, piano, piano duo.

The duration of the work must be no more than five minutes.

The submission must be an original, un-commissioned and un-published work with no previous public performance.

The submitted compositions will be judged by a three member jury comprised of
respected members of the music community, including a member of the Pulse faculty.

Following the workshop, a winner will be announced. Cash prizes will be awarded.

All decisions of the judges are final.

 

Pulse Faculty Biographies

Jeanette Bernal-Singh

violin

Jeanette Bernal-Singh has won many national and international awards and competitions.  Her performances have taken her all over North America, Europe, South East Asia, India and Australia.  She did her undergraduate studies at Indiana University, and holds a masters degree from the University of British Columbia.  Jeanette has recorded for broadcasts and CDs of Indian, Mexican, and Chinese music.  She is presently Assistant Principal second violin of the Vancouver Symphony, and is also concertmaster of the Orchestre Des Concerts Diemecke.

Elizabeth Bergmann

Elizabeth has an active performing career and is the recipient of many awards and prizes of international competitions. She performs most regularly with her husband as the
Bergmann Piano Duo. Recitals and concerts with orchestra have taken them to many parts of the world. Elizabeth is nationally and internationally involved as a lecturer and juror of festivals, workshops and competitions.  Elizabeth is Artistic Director, Concerts at Langley Community Music School.

Marcel Bergmann

piano, composition, improvisation

Marcel enjoys an active musical career as a performer, composer, improviser and teacher.  A laureate of several international competitions, Marcel is also internationally active as a clinician, juror, and lecturer and has worked as a collaborative pianist and vocal coach. He has written numerous works for film, theater and cabaret productions, as well as choral and chamber music. Marcel is a former professor at Mohawk College in Ontario.  He is an associate of the Canadian Music Centre and is Director of Program Advancement at Langley Community Music School.

Joel Stobbe

cello

After studying in Augsburg, Germany, Joel Stobbe returned to Canada as a founding member of the Borealis String Quartet (2000-2005).  Joel is currently the principal cellist of the Vancouver Island Symphony, and enjoys an active career giving frequent concerts as soloist and chamber musician.  Joel is the program coordinator for advanced programs and is a dedicated pedagogue at the Langley Community Music School.
