About Dr. Joy Yeh, harp
Dr. Joy Yeh (BM. UBC, MM. Yale, DM, Indiana) serves as Professor and Chair of the Harp Department at the Vancouver Academy of Music, and formerly served as harp faculty at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. In addition to her work at these institutions, Dr. Yeh maintains a thriving harp studio at the Richmond Arts Village.
Dr. Yeh’s students have consistently excelled, winning top prizes at numerous prestigious international competitions, including the Korean International Harp Competition, the International Harp Competition in Japan, the USA International Music Competition, the Vancouver International Music Competition, and the Canadian Music Competition. Several students have also received Gold Medals from the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) for achieving the highest examination scores in BC. In recognition of her outstanding contributions to music education, Dr. Yeh has been awarded multiple Teacher’s Certificates of Recognition by the Royal Conservatory of Music. Beyond competitions, Dr. Yeh encourages her students to remain actively engaged with their community. Together, they have performed at various local events in Richmond and Vancouver, including the Richmond Women’s Resource Centre, Terra Nova Nature School, BC Liver Cancer Society, Thompson Community Centre, Richmond Garlic Festival, and Steveston’s Canada Day Celebrations. Inspired by Dr. Yeh’s commitment to community service, one of her students, now a UBC undergraduate, founded the Harmony Music Charity Foundation, which brings young harpists to perform at nursing homes and senior centres, sharing their music and brightening the lives of the elderly.
Dr. Yeh also actively supports her students in gaining professional performance experience, connecting them with renowned organizations such as the Vancouver Bach Choir, Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra, Sunshine Coast Symphony Orchestra, and Richmond Symphony Orchestra.
Believing strongly in “leading by example,” Dr. Yeh maintains an active performing career alongside her teaching. She has appeared as a soloist with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra, Prince George Symphony Orchestra, Kamloops Symphony Orchestra, and the UBC Symphony Orchestra. Her performances have taken her to prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, Konzerthaus Berlin, and major festivals such as the World Harp Congress (Canada and Hong Kong) and the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival in Germany. Her recordings have been featured on CBC Radio 2, and her work has been highlighted by media outlets including Fairchild Radio FM96.1, CFJC Midday TV, Talentvision TV, Richmond Review, and Taste of Life Magazine. Earlier in her career, Dr. Yeh was the recipient of grants from both the Canada Council for the Arts and the British Columbia Arts Council.
Dr. Yeh is also committed to fostering collaboration across Canada’s harp community, particularly encouraging artistic exchange between the West Coast and East Coast. Her expertise is sought after internationally; she is frequently invited to serve as a jury member for music competitions and festivals, as well as to lead masterclasses around the world. In addition, Dr. Yeh has invited leading harpists from Ontario, Quebec, Florida, London, and New York to perform and teach in Vancouver, all of whom expressed admiration for the exceptionally high caliber of Vancouver’s harp students. Looking ahead, Dr. Yeh plans to bring Canada’s prize-winning young harpists to perform at the World Harp Congress, the world’s largest and most prestigious harp event—a significant milestone that will showcase the extraordinary development of Canadian harpists over the past decade.
