The cornerstone classical masterpiece on the program, a ‘pocket’ version of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony by Carl Burchard for one piano 4 hands, violin and cello leaves nothing out in terms of fullness and exuberance. Acclaimed musicians Jasper Wood (violin), Joseph Elworthy (cello) and the Bergmann Piano Duo will also perform the Hebrides Overture by Mendelssohn, a selection of Brahms Hungarian Dances, and additional works that celebrate the splendid and rich combination of strings and piano.
The concert will be performed in the Rose Gellert Hall.

About the Artists
Jasper Wood – violin
Canadian violinist, Jasper Wood, has established a flourishing reputation as a soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician. He made his solo orchestral debut at the age of 13 with Symphony Nova Scotia under the baton of the renowned Georg Tintner. Jasper has captivated audiences at prestigious venues such as Dame Myra Hess in Chicago, Carnegie Weill Recital Hall in New York, and the Toronto Centre for the Performing Arts. Originally hailing from Moncton, New Brunswick, he is equally committed to sharing his artistry in smaller communities.
With an impressive discography comprising 13 CDs, Jasper showcases a rich repertoire featuring works by Mozart, Strauss, Debussy, Ravel, Ives, Stravinsky, Bartok, and underrepresented composers, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to contemporary music and commissioned works. His numerous accolades, including recognition from the Juno Awards, East Coast Music Awards, West Coast Music Awards, and the Indie Awards, attest to his musical prowess. Jasper is a familiar presence on airwaves, with appearances on CBC Radio, CBC Television, Bravo Television, and NPR in the United States.
Beyond his performances, Jasper is a passionate advocate for music education. He frequently visits schools and conducts masterclasses, embodying his commitment to nurturing the next generation of musicians. He was co-artistic director of the Young Artist Experiences (YAE), an organization that seamlessly integrates arts, sciences, humanities, and social responsibility through chamber music.
Residing in Vancouver with his wife and two children, Jasper Wood’s contributions to the world of classical music extend beyond the stage. He serves as the Artistic Director of the Galiano Concert Society and as Associate Director, Chair of the String Division, and Professor of violin and chamber music at the University of British Columbia.
Joseph Elworthy – cello
President & CEO of the Vancouver Academy of Music, Joseph Elworthy, is driven by a passion for music education and performance. Mr. Elworthy has graced the stages of Alice Tully Hall, Suntory Hall, Carnegie Hall, the Library of Congress, and Sejong Hall as a featured soloist, recitalist, and chamber music performer. His exceptional contribution to Canadian Arts and Culture has earned him the prestigious Fellow of The Royal Conservatory of Music title. His music, a testament to his dedication, can be enjoyed on EMI, Sony, Archetype, Naxos and Bose record labels.
In addition to receiving the Sylva Gelber Award, Joseph has received multiple Canada Council career grants. Mr. Elworthy is a graduate of the Juilliard School and Yale University, where he received the Aldo Parisot – Yo-Yo Ma Prize – the highest honour issued by Yale University to a graduating cellist. Mr. Elworthy has been a visiting artist at the Beijing Conservatory, Harvard University, Royal Northern College of Music, Glenn Gould School, and the Royal Conservatory of Music.
Joseph Elworthy is co-artistic director of the Sea to Sky Summer Chamberfest and the Vancouver Academy of Music Chamber Players. Mr. Elworthy served as Western Music Advisor for the Haw Par Music Foundation – a collaborative educational initiative linking Vancouver and Hong Kong from 2012-2023. Before he was appointed VAM’s President & CEO in 2011, Mr. Elworthy was a member of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra for twelve years. Joseph plays on a rare Ferdinando Gagliano cello that once belonged to the legendary German cellist Hugo Becker.
Bergmann Piano Duo – Elizabeth and Marcel Bergmann
The Bergmann Piano Duo’s dynamic and energetic performances of uniquely eclectic programmes have inspired audiences for more than two decades. Their recitals and concerts with orchestras have taken them to many parts of the world, including the United States, Italy, Germany, The Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, France, Macedonia, Greece, China and Canada. The duo has appeared at international festivals including: Festival of the Sound, Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival, Tuckamore Festival, Abbey Bach Festival, Ohrid Summer Festival, Zodiac Festival, The San Francisco International Music Festival, MusicFest Vancouver, Gilmore International Keyboard Festival, Banff Arts Festival, the Royal Bank Calgary International Organ Festival and Competition, Festival Miami, the Tage für Neue Musik, Darmstadt, the Braunschweiger Kammermusik Podium, and EXPO 2000, Hannover.
They have made recordings for the CBC, for several stations of the ARD in Germany and for National Public Radio. The duo has recorded several CDs, which appear on the CordAria, Arktos, Koch International Classics, Naxos, ARS and Brilliant Classics labels. Their latest releases on the Brilliant Classics label feature Marcel’s arrangement for 4 pianos of Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells and a collection of minimal music for multiple pianos also featuring Marcel’s compositions. Their most recent recording, American Stories on the ARS label, features exclusively Marcel’s arrangements.
In addition to their performing careers they also enjoy teaching and working in other capacities in the music industry, and both teach piano at Langley Community Music School (LCMS). They are both Artistic Directors of White Rock Concerts, and Elizabeth is Artistic Director of Concerts and Marcel the Resident Composer at LCMS. Marcel has held a position as Professor of Music at Mohawk College in Hamilton and both Elizabeth and Marcel have been on faculty at Mount Royal University and University of Calgary as well as being involved in various musical projects at The Banff Centre for the Arts. In 2004/2005, they served as Artistic Directors of The Murray Dranoff International Two Piano Competition and Foundation in Miami. For many years, they were members of the Calgary based group Land’s End Chamber Ensemble, recipients of the 2005 and 2006 Western Canadian Music Awards for Outstanding Classical Recording.
The duo studied with Arie Vardi at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater, Hannover and with Jean-Eudes Vaillancourt at the Université de Montréal. They received first prize at the International Chamber Music Competition in Caltanissetta, Italy, and were laureates of The 4th Murray Dranoff International Two Piano Competition. They performed extensively in Germany as members of the young artists’ roster of Yehudi Menuhin-Live Music Now.
Committed to supporting the production of new repertoire, the duo has commissioned and premiered several works by Canadian composers. Their extensive repertoire ranges from the baroque to the contemporary and includes numerous own arrangements and compositions.
