Described by the Winnipeg Free Press as a “consummate musician” who plays with “near-impossible fluidity” and “total physical involvement and passion,” Canadian pianist Dr. Scott Meek is a highly active and sought-after chamber musician, collaborative pianist, and teacher in Greater Vancouver, British Columbia.
Since graduating in 2010 with a Doctorate of Music from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, Dr. Meek has been on the faculty of several schools in the greater Vancouver area. His students have won awards in local festivals and competitions, and have participated in concerto performances with orchestra at the Chan Centre (Mozart School of Music’s Gifted Artist Concerto Gala). Dr. Meek has an easygoing personality and a teaching style that emphasizes developing physical ease of playing combined with musical gestures, and passing on thorough knowledge of all Classical styles and genres. He also believes in the importance of performing, and encourages students to enter festivals and play in public as much as possible.
Dr. Meek was an adjudicator for the CFMTA National Piano Competition in 2019 and for the Manitoba Registered Music Teacher’s Association’s Provincial Festival in 2021. He has given masterclasses at various universities in Taiwan, as well as locally.
Dr. Meek performs and records frequently with his wife, pianist Clare Yuan, as part of The Meeks Duo. He has extensive experience with piano duo repertoire, and has created nearly 100 arrangements for piano duet. As a collaborative pianist, Dr. Meek’s repertoire includes over 170 complete concertos and sonatas.
Dr. Meek received his Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts from Oberlin College, studying Alvin Chow; he completed his Master’s and Doctorate degrees at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, studying under world-renowned pianist, Menahem Pressler. Dr. Meek was a prizewinner in numerous international and national competitions, and has performed as soloist with orchestras across Canada.
