Baroque with a Twist of Lively Salsa at upcoming Langley Concert
Prepare for an “unforgettable evening” of “infectious enjoyment” at Langley Community Music School’s (LCMS) Rose Gellert Hall’s season opener this Friday, October 24, 2015, at 7:30 pm. Ensemble Caprice of Montreal will perform their world-renowned, innovative and adventuresome program entitled “Salsa Baroque.”
Highlighting the music of Latin America and Spain of the 17th and 18th centuries, Ensemble Caprice’s “Salsa Baroque” program blends European polyphony and Latin American traditional music together in an unusual way. The Toronto Star says that their music is “most beautiful” but also “one of the most inventive.” The Montreal Gazette says, “It was an unforgettable evening — the kind that leaves you contemplating large questions and wondering why so few performances do.” And the Washington Post adds, “The artists’ physical involvement and infectious enjoyment, conveyed through body rhythms and expression, were what music should always be about.”
One of the most important baroque ensembles of the present day music scene, Ensemble Caprice tours extensively, and has been a regular guest at many prestigious European and North American festivals and venues. The Ensemble’s recording activity is every bit as impressive, comprising over twenty CD’s — on the Analekta, ATMA Classique and Antes labels — sold in some fifty countries around the world. LCMS artistic director, Elizabeth Bergmann says, “Ensemble Caprice gives a different ‘twist’ to the meaning of Baroque music. Their unique ‘Salsa Baroque’ program represents an interesting mixture of musical influences from Latin and South America, Africa and Europe. The composers featured in the program drew inspiration from a multitude of countries such as Peru, Bolivia, Portugal, Mexico and Spain — and were also influenced by African rhythms.”
Bergmann continues, “I am intrigued by the ‘Salsa Baroque’ program that Ensemble Caprice has lined up for our opening Rose Gellert Concert and I anticipate we will all enjoy discovering some wonderful new music.”
The Langley Community Music School hosts multiple musical concerts from October to May, including the Concerts Café Classico Series, an afternoon concert series featuring stellar local and touring musicians playing classical, jazz or contemporary works, as well as the Rose Gellert Hall Series, an evening concert series featuring renowned Canadian and international musicians. The 2015/16 season is sponsored by Hub Insurance.
Tickets for the Rose Gellert Concert event are $25 for adults, $22 for seniors, $16 for students, and $10 for LCMS students. Enjoy all four concerts in the 2015-2016 season and save about 15% off regular ticket prices with a subscription.
