The brass trio, One, Two, Trio, consists of Jeremy Berkman, trombone, Katherine Evans, trumpet and Valerie Whitney, french horn and will provide a journey from the past four hundred years with the music of Bach and Byrd to Bernstein and Beiderbecke, Poulenc to Pulcinella! Special guest, pianist/composer/trumpeter Alan Matheson whose expertise in music of the 20th century, whether clapping on one and three, or two and four – will be joining them for this entertaining programme!
The concert will open with an informal conversation between LCMS’ Artistic Director Elizabeth Bergmann and the artists, followed by complimentary coffee, tea and refreshments before the performance. The performance will take place in the Rose Gellert Hall and will last approximately 60 min, with no intermission.

BIOGRAPHIES
One, Two, Trio

The One, Two, Trio performers are members of the UBC School of Music community. Founded in 2020 as sort of a response to the shuttering of many larger ensemble and venue opportunities, they found musical enjoyment in creating a trio to focus on smaller musical bubbles where they could make more intimate connections with their music-making.
Katherine Evans, trumpet
Katherine Evans holds a Master of Music in trumpet performance from the Longy School of Music and a B.A. in English and Music from Harvard University. Previous principal trumpet and soloist with several regional symphonies around Boston, MA, Ms. Evans is now in her fifth season as principal trumpet of the Newport Symphony Orchestra (OR) and sings with local vocal group musica intima.
Valerie Whitney, french horn
Assistant Professor, Horn and Brass Area Coordinator at UBC, Valerie Whitney, performed in and around the Chicago area for over a decade and regularly appears with esteemed performing organizations such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Lyric Opera, and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Whitney has been playing in the Vancouver Brass Orchestra, and guesting with the Turning Point Ensemble.
Jeremy Berkman, trombone
Julliard School graduate Jeremy Berkman is a sessional instructor of trombone and chamber music coach at UBC. He is also founding member and Director of Outreach for Vancouver’s award-winning Turning Point Ensemble (TPE) chamber orchestra and Principal Trombonist with the Vancouver Opera Orchestra. He has recorded 5 cds with cellist Peggy Lee’s Octet, with the band receiving a Juno nomination for their 2014 cd Invitation.
Special Guest, Alan Matheson, trumpet, piano, composer
Alan Matheson is a Vancouver-based pianist, trumpeter, composer and arranger. He teaches at the University of British Columbia School of Music where he is an instructor in jazz piano and trumpet and at the Vancouver Symphony School of Music where he lectures in jazz history and teaches jazz piano and trumpet. Alan also taught for over thirty years at the Vancouver Community College School of Music (trumpet, jazz history, jazz piano and jazz ensembles). He is a graduate of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois and studied with Vincent Cichowicz. Alan has also studied with Stephen Chatman, Barbara Butler, Joe Newman and Clark Terry. Alan’s compositions have been performed by Julia Nolan (saxophone), Sal Ferreras (percussion), David Palmer (pipe organ) and Martin Hackelman (horn). His arrangements for big band have been performed by the Tulane University Jazz Ensemble and the Northwestern University Jazz Ensemble. Alan’s first CD “Intrada” was released in 2004 and his CDs “Duetti” and “Summer Evening” (recorded in Finland with bassist Wade Mikkola) were released in 2013 and 2015 respectively.
Alan has also been a regular instructor at the Otava, Finland “Classic Jazz Camp” since 2008 and performed in Helsinki and in July 2019 with saxophonist Juli Wood and Wade Mikkola at the Storyville Jazz Club.
