Classes are Mon, Wed, Fri, and Thurs August 10. RCM exams August 11-12.
**For History classes and Level 6 & 8 Theory only. Harmony starts July 5.

HISTORY CLASSES

Complete RCM History requirements this summer. Class emphasis is on listening to the music being studied. Students will learn to distinguish the style characteristics of different composers and time periods, and how to recognize the structure and form of what they are hearing. Short quizzes will be held in class. Students will need to study dates, composers’ lives, and other relevant material on their own and in study groups. Each hour of class time must be matched by two hours of individual and/or group study.

Course Materials: Students should not purchase textbooks, as course materials will be provided by the instructor ($40 fee).

A non-refundable deposit of $100 is due at time of registration.

LEVEL 9 HISTORY
Cost: $575 (plus $40 for course materials)

This course (formerly called History 1) covers the music of the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic Periods, as well as the Modern period, as outlined in the current Theory Syllabus.

LEVEL 10 HISTORY
Cost: $575 (plus $40 for course materials)

This course (formerly History 2) covers a large amount of material, from Gregorian Chant to Schubert as outlined in the current Theory Syllabus.

ARCT HISTORY
Cost: $575 (plus $40 for course materials)

This course (formerly History 3) covers Romantic, Modern , and Canadian composers/performers.

THEORY CLASSES

LEVEL 6 THEORY
Cost: $300 (plus $40 for course materials)

This course (formerly Intermediate Rudiments) prepares students to write the Level 6 Theory exam.

LEVEL 8 THEORY
Cost: $300 (plus $40 for course materials)

This course (formerly Advanced Rudiments) prepares students to write the Level 8 Theory exam.

LEVEL 9 HARMONY
Cost: $475 (plus $50 for course materials)

This course (formerly Basic Harmony) prepares students to write the Level 9 Harmony exam.

For all theory classes: Students will be provided course materials and workbooks by the instructor for a fee. Short quizzes will be held in-class. Independent study outside of class time will be required.

PRIVATE LESSONS

In addition to classes, all history and theory levels are available by private lesson. Standard LCMS 2017/18 lesson rates apply. Levels not offered as classes are available by private/semi-private lesson only.

 

Biography

Jennifer Silva

Jennifer Silva has 30 years experience as a music teacher. She joined the Registered Music Teacher’s Association in 1987 in North Vancouver. She is now a member of the South Fraser Branch, and is registered as a theory specialist, as well as a piano teacher. Jennifer has been active in the branch, and was President of the South Fraser RMT from 2008 – 2009. Jennifer Silva received her Bachelor’s of Music degree from the University of British Columbia in 1989, and the A.R.C.T. diploma in Piano Performance in 1985.   Jennifer’s focus is on fostering a lifelong enjoyment and appreciation of music.
